Speech Evaluations

For late talkers and more

A speech evaluation is the first step to getting your late talker the exact speech therapy tools he or she needs. The evaluation helps guide the speech therapist to figure out exactly what to work on with your child, talk through your personal goals, and gain a complete understanding of you and your child’s needs so there’s no wasted time.

For a young child, a speech evaluation will include lots of play and interaction with your child in their environment, a comprehensive parent and caregiver interview, and looking at developmental speech, language, and play milestones.

For an older child, a more formal or standardized assessment may be used, too.

A speech evaluation will take a look at numerous skills including:
  • Receptive and expressive vocabulary (what your child says and what your child understands)
  • Social language and pragmatic communication and interactions
  •  Understanding and expression of written language and longer narratives
  •  Understanding of basic concepts and following directions
  • Play
  • Articulation
  • Intelligibility of overall verbal speech and communication
  •  Voice quality
  • Fluency
  •  Word order and grammar (Called syntax and morphology)

After the speech evaluation is complete, a written report and a complete treatment plan is provided. This includes a summary of the assessments and overall impressions, recommendations, referrals to any other necessary professionals, and rationales for why this is the best course of action.

Everything is discussed with you, the caregiver, because you know your child best. If there is anything that doesn’t satisfy you, we can discuss what would work better for you. You’ll also get a progress report every three months so you can keep track of your child's progress.

Lily has been working with my son for only about a month now and the progress we have seen has been amazing. Lily is very informative and as parents who are just learning how to get the most out of our son and the proper way of teaching him to communicate, I truly feel we understand our child as a whole better than we ever have because of her help. A true blessing!

Julie L.

Hands down Lily is an amazing therapist. Lily has been working with my 2 year old daughter since September and has been absolutely incredible. Lily teaches us methods to implement at home and works with my daughter using techniques that resonate with her. Lily does play based therapy for my daughter, keeping it fun and instructional. Since starting with Lily my daughters speaking has greatly improved and I really do attribute that to Lily. I highly recommend her!

Lily not only provides great services to my toddler, but also validates my own concerns and then provides parent strategies! So grateful for her.
