Andy Makes the Announcements

On Andy's first day of school, he's asked to read the morning announcements—a moment that feels impossible because he stutters.

With encouragement, determination, and practice, Andy begins to discover that confidence doesn't come from having "perfect" speech. It comes from believing in yourself, learning new strategies, and finding the courage to use your voice.

Inspired by real speech therapy techniques, this story introduces children to concepts like smooth speech, pacing, and positive self-talk in a way that's engaging, age-appropriate, and empowering. It's a story about communication, confidence, resilience, and celebrating every child's unique voice.

I'm Lily Goldberg, M.S., CCC-SLP, a pediatric speech-language pathologist and the founder of Lilypad Speech & Language Therapy.

I wrote Andy Makes the Announcements postpartum during COVID while working virtually from home with a newborn and spending my days immersed in a stuttering research project. Listening to the stories of children, teens, and adults who stutter, I kept coming back to one thought:

Kids deserve a story that helps them feel seen—without shame, without pressure to hide, and without believing they have to speak perfectly to be heard.

Andy isn't about "fixing" a stutter. It's about building confidence, embracing your voice, and showing children that every communicator has something important to say. Woven throughout the story are real-life speech therapy techniques and strategies that encourage communication in a hopeful, empowering way.

What the reviews say...

We bought this book for our three year old. She doesn’t have a stutter but gets frustrated easily and has trouble overcoming anything that doesn’t come easy to her. The progression of the storyline is very well thought out. We love how she starts by going through all the old wives tales of how to get rid of a stutter. Our daughter thought that was so silly! And then Andy eventually learns from his friend Tommy Turtle friend to try taking it slow. We also made sure to point out to our daughter how he practices first! Not everything comes easy! Overall great read! Very relatable and the lesson/message is delivered in kid friendly way.
